Confucius (551-479 BC)

One of the most famous people in ancient China was a wise and learned man named kung Fu-Tzu whose English name is Confucius. As a young man, he studied history and archeology, and entered the Chinese civil service. As a court philosopher, he advised the rulers on how to rule kindly as well as to ‘lead by inner virtue.

As a historical writer, Confucius collected poems, stories and legends and combined them into a series of books. Among these books are the ‘Books of Odes’, the ‘Book of Tradition’, the ‘Book of Rites’ and the ‘Book of Changes’ that still survive as classics of Chinese literature
