King Henry VIII had drawn up a scheme for a balanced Council of regency for the rule of his young son Edward VI. He had anticipated his death in those years. Accordingly the old council of learning and new council of learning found equal representation in the Council. Duke of Somerset had been named to head the Council of regency, the natural guardian of his young nephew’s throne. The Duke of Somerset was a weak and unpractical man who mismanaged the affairs of the country. He was driven from power in disgrace. Somerset’s lack of diplomacy caused a war with Scotland.
